THE WASHINGTON D.C. DERMATOLOGICAL SOCIETY
MEETING MINUTES

Host: National Naval Medical Center / Walter Reed Army Medical Center
Friday, February 27, 2009

The business meeting was called to order by Dr. Roselyn E. Epps at 3:00pm.

OLD BUSINESS:
The minutes of the January 2009 meeting at Childrens were presented and approved with no corrections.

MEMBERSHIP:  The application for membership for Iris Rubin, M.D. was voted upon and she was accepted for membership.  Applications for Juan-Carlos Caballero, M.D. and Faris Hawit, M.D. were accepted and will be presented for voting at the next meeting.

CME Update: Approval for CME for the Society through the Washington Hospital Center was still pending at the time of the meeting.

501C-3 STATUS / Community Outreach:  In previous meetings, there has been discussion of the opportunity for our members to document our efforts and receive credit for pro-bono work seeing patients in our offices.  A form was handed out at the meeting, and should be available from the website, for members to volunteer for this type of work, and for the Society to be able to keep track of our efforts.

NEW BUSINESS:
Our first Society Scholarship was awarded to Patrick Blake, a medical student and HHMI Research Scholar at the NIH, NCI Division of Cancer Epidemiology.  He will use the $2,000 grant to attend the International Congress of Dermatology meeting in Prague where he will present his research abstracts. All three of his abstracts have been accepted for poster presentation and are being reviewed for oral presentation in the resident research section.  The abstracts and the titles are as follows: “Mutation summary and review of CYLD in Brooke-Spiegler syndrome”, “Cutaneous appendageal tumor incidence and survival in the United States: A population-based study” and “Prior history of non-melanoma skin cancer is associated with increased mortality in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia”.

It was announced the DC Dermatological Society member and past president, Sandra Read, M.D. is a candidate for VP elect for the American Academy of Dermatology.

Heidi Kong, M.D. from the NIH announced that they are looking for patient referrals for two studies.  The first is a Human Microbiome study looking for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis patients.  The second is a new trial for the treatment of CTCL with a new topical form of Romidepsin.

Dr. Nina Fisher announced the unexpected illness of one of her partners and asked that if there is a member with a Virginia license and time for locum tenens in her office, they could use help.

Next Meetings:
April 3-5, 2009: Atlantic Dermatological Society, Baltimore, MD
May 19, 2009: Howard University Hospital.

Respectfully submitted,
Todd E. Perkins, MD
