THE WASHINGTON D.C. DERMATOLOGICAL SOCIETY
MEETING MINUTES

Host: Howard University Hospital
Date: Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Call To Order: The meeting was called to order at 7:15 PM.

President Vincenzo Giannelli thanked Dr. Rebat Halder and the Howard University residents for preparing an excellent meeting.

Announcements: Dr. Chesahna Kindred stated that the Cicatricial Alopecia Research Foundation (CARF) will hold its Third International Conference for Patients and Doctors September 26-28, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, VA.  Lectures and live patient conference are scheduled.  If you would like to present a patient or attend, please contact Drs. Valerie Callender, Len Sperling, or Vera Price, or go to www.carfintl.org.

The DC Derm Society webpage is now up to date.  The webmaster has been relocated.  If website maintenance problems occur in the future, an alternative webmaster may be considered.  The new membership application and DC Derm grant application can be downloaded from the website.

Approval of Minutes: The minutes were approved without correction.

Atlantic Dermatology Meeting: The recent Atlantic Dermatology Meeting in Canada was well attended.  The next meeting will be in Baltimore, MD, May 2009.

Volunteer Opportunity: Dr. Sandra Read conveyed by email that there are opportunities for dermatologists to volunteer abroad.  There has been a request for a pediatric dermatologist to serve 1-2 weeks in Cambodia.  For more information, contact Dr. Read.

CME Clarification: Eighteen months ago, the AAD sent all green card programs notification that it could no longer provide CME credit.  All CME must be AMA PRA Category 1 credits, which could not be provided for local groups and societies.  Over 350 programs are affected, and are no longer recognized.  As of January 1, 2008, all programs need to arrange their own AMA PRA Category 1 credits.

This issue has been discussed at many DC Derm meetings.  Due to cost, each DC Derm meeting institution was to arrange its own CME credits.  This is a time consuming process with a lot of paper work which can be costly ($2000-3000 per meeting).  Dr. Alan Moshell has spearheaded an effort so that all DC Derm meetings shall be sponsored by the Washington Hospital Center.  We thank him for his hard work on this issue.  DC Derm dues should be enough to cover the increased cost of providing CME credits.  It is unknown whether or not retroactive CME credits can be awarded.  There will otherwise be no change to meetings at each institution.  Evaluations will still be turned in.

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM.

Respectfully Submitted,
Roselyn E. Epps, M.D.
